FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
With almost forty years in the skip hire business, the same questions often pop up from customers.
To make things easier for you, we have compiled a list of the most common queries to come our way and our answers to those queries. Hopefully this will help you when deciding on the right skip hire package for you.
What Size Skip Do I Need?
It really depends on the size of the job and how much rubbish you are looking to get rid of. We have a wide selection of skips in stock, in different sizes to suit your needs – everything from builders skips for home renovation and construction use, medium skips for house clearance and roofing works or large skips for garden clearance and commercial premises. Check out our Skip Sizes page for full details.
Do I Need Permission To Have A Skip on My Property?
Generally speaking, no – although the rules do vary from one local council to the next. Fortunately for our customers across North West London, we have decades of experience supplying skips across this part of the capital, allowing us to guide you through the process of obtaining any necessary licences and permissions.
What Items Can I Put in a Skip?
There are rules and regulations in place that determine what can be put into a skip for general waste disposal. The following items are among the most common types of garden and household waste that we collect. All of these are perfectly fine to be disposed of in this manner:
- metal
- bricks, rubble, and wood
- uncontaminated soil
- leaves, branches, and other green waste
- broken furniture (excluding upholstered seating)
- electrical items & white goods (excluding fridges/freezers)
- cardboard and plastic packaging
- glass
- plastics
- solidified paints
What Items Can I Not Put in a Skip?
• mattresses
• vehicle tyres
• pressurised containers such as gas bottles & fire extinguishers
• upholstered seating items - including any part made of or containing leather, synthetic leather, other fabric or foam:
- sofas
- sofa beds
- armchairs
- kitchen and dining room chairs
- stools and foot stools
- home office chairs
- futons
- bean bags, floor and sofa cushions
• fridges, freezers and air conditioning units
• hazardous or toxic materials
• asbestos
• fuel
• oil
• lead paint
• batteries
• clinical or medical waste
• animal waste
• plasterboard must go into a separate skip and should not be mixed with other waste.
Customers are responsible for all waste in their skip even if put there by someone else so we recommended skips are monitored and secured at all times.
If prohibited or restricted items are found when the skip is emptied they will be subject to additional charges.
How Long Is The Skip Hire Contract?
When you hire a skip from T Kearney Skip Hire, you usually have it on your property for two weeks. If you need it for a longer period, we usually can arrange extended terms for you. When your skip is full please let us know, we will be able to arrange to collect within a few days
What Happens To My Rubbish After Collection?
We are an environmentally-friendly firm. All domestic and commercial waste is taken to a nearby waste transfer centre for sorting into recyclable and non-recyclable materials. The former is then taken to local recycling facilities for processing. In this way, we are able to minimise the amount of rubbish and waste material that ends up in local landfill.
Where Do You Cover?
We are based in Harrow, but our fleet of skip delivery trucks cover the whole of North West London. We have a dedicated crew of drivers who will deliver and collect your skips throughout the working day. Between us, we cover Barnet, Ealing, Edgware, Finchley, Harrow, Hendon, Kilburn, Northwood, Pinner, Stanmore, Uxbridge, Wembley, and beyond.
